How much life insurance do you need?

A tool that walks through the calculation: how many income years matter, which debts to include, education funding needed and existing resources to subtract.

The standard approach is to calculate your income's annual value multiplied by your coverage years, add anticipated obligations like debts and education, then subtract resources already in place. Precision is not required since coverage amounts are rounded; the goal is a figure that preserves your household's financial footing through your family's critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Estimate = (annual income × coverage years) + debts + education − savings and existing coverage, rounded to $5,000 increments. This is a starting framework, not financial advice.

Why those inputs

Income years. Financial professionals typically suggest that coverage should replace 10 to 20 years of your income; the exact number depends on your family's support timeline. In Indio, households with young children often lean toward the longer end of this range because major expenses—housing, childcare and education—often coincide.

Debts. For most households, a mortgage is the biggest financial obligation. Having coverage sufficient to pay it off gives your family the freedom to make their own housing choices instead of being forced by immediate financial pressure.

Education. Estimate the cost per child in today's money and include it in your benefit amount. Including it now is simpler than trying to add another policy later.

What you have. Include savings available for emergencies and any group insurance coverage through your employer. Since group coverage typically ends when employment ends, many people count only a portion of it.

Once you settle on a target amount, use the quote tool to see pricing across all available carriers for each term length from 10 to 30 years. Many people choose an amount slightly higher than their calculation because the additional monthly cost is minimal when applied at younger ages.
